This series of workshops focuses on the Minuskilian script, designed by Josie – based on a particular set of Hermann Kilian’s capitals. We will begin by looking at Kilian’s capitals which have a unique tension about them, and are quite quirky yet incredibly elegant. We will then take those shapes and learn the lower case Minuskilian (named after “minuscule” and “Kilian”) using a pencil, then pointed pen. There are several possible variations, offering the artist a wide range of contrasts for interpretation. Finally, we will take this script into the realms of the broad-edge, using some pen manipulation to construct a distinctive but very useable hand, as well as a “fractured outline” version – for fun. This course is suitable for all levels, although the final session is likely to be challenging for beginners.
Members have priority registration until November 18; then the workshop is open to the general public. Deadline to register is December 18, 2023.
About Josie: Josie Brown is classically trained in Calligraphy, Heraldry, Illumination and Bookbinding and has worked as a practitioner of these since the 1980’s. Josie has enjoyed receiving commissions from the public, private, military and educational sectors – completing works in both traditional and contemporary styles. She also undertakes creative projects which originate in historical techniques which she then uses in modern ways. Josie has taught calligraphy, bookbinding and related arts for 40 years and is committed to raising the standards of teaching in this field. She is currently Chair of the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society’s Academic Standards Board, their Chief Assessor and has written numerous courses for various lettering educational providers. What she enjoys most is playing with letters and paper!
