Description

Brush lettering is one of the most expressive forms of calligraphy used today. We see it in many commercial applications, such as labels, movie posters, book covers, and packaging. With a brush, it is possible to recreate many styles—both classic and non-classic—using pressure techniques, ranging from italic forms to various types of cursive and even sign painting styles. This workshop aims to help participants understand the basics of how a round brush works and how to achieve a formal style of writing (at least initially) based on the structure of italic script, following the model proposed by the instructor.

After the initial exercises on individual strokes and brush control, we’ll move on to constructing the alphabet and words, learning to create variations in thickness, slant, and movement to make our writing fresh and compelling, with a touch of the unexpected and originality.

We’ll review the basics of brush writing to develop a solid method for creating, through practice, a personal style with strong expressive power.
