There are many good reasons to pick up the flat brush more often as a calligrapher. You can work on a larger scale, you can write on surfaces (wood, fabric, metal, glass...) where a pen is useless, you can aim for special effects such as dry brush technique or layering, and last but not least, the flat brush gives you insight into all kinds of subtleties because it allows you to work more easily with pressure and manipulation.
These two Zoom sessions are primarily aimed at developing and further sharpening that sensitivity. Increased skill with the brush has a beneficial influence on all your calligraphy, no matter which instrument you use.
What you can achieve with pressure and manipulation is initially demonstrated and practiced in individual strokes, but we will soon move on to a sans-serif alphabet for further practice
In a subsequent stage, we’ll learn to handle that alphabet more freely and let the letters swing and dance across the page.
More control over the brush invariably increases the joy of writing which in turn encourages us to search for new and subtle letter variations.

Supply List:
- Two flat brushes of different sizes in excellent shape. I recommend Raphael Kaerell nr 6 and 8 (BR24)
* Be sure to have them properly prepared two weeks in advance. Watch how master calligrapher John Steven prepares his flat brush – it sure makes a difference!
- Gouache (WNG1, HG749, SG27)
- Practice paper. Any paper will do, but best to try a paper with some tooth/resistance. Sketch paper from Canson is fine, so is Kraft paper (P108, PS109)
- Mixing palette, rag, water container (S747, S1695)
