Description

The use of capitals in a calligraphy piece has a few advantages over lowercase letters: it slows down the reading, you can easily spread or sprinkle them out over the page according to your layout demands and you can make textures without having to worry about descenders or ascenders ruining the overall look. On top of that, when you choose for tiny caps, you can really draw the viewer in, invite him to step closer and admire your precious little caps. For yes, there’s an opportunity there to dazzle him with your skill, to show that you treated each and every single one of them equally with love and care.

Small capitals work well in titles, attributions and side notes but they also function great in textures and are often a welcome solution for layout issues.

In this workshop we will cover formal, drawn and gestural caps, using pencil, pen and fineliner. Special attention will be paid to variations of all kinds, the small details that matter and the technicalities of the execution.
