When we think of block capitals and monoline calligraphy, Rudolf Koch’s iconic typeface Neuland often comes to mind. Yet monoline calligraphy extends far beyond Koch’s renowned work. Its modular structures invite playfulness and open up endless possibilities for composition and graphic expression. Monoline calligraphy is particularly well-suited for exploring calligrams and serves as an excellent introduction to the art of handmade embossing. Its bold, solid strokes make the cutting process more approachable when working with an X-Acto knife, allowing for precision and control. In this three-day online workshop, we will explore my personal approach to monoline calligraphy, experimenting with variations in size, shape, rhythm, and composition. From there, we will transition into the hand embossing process, transforming our designs into striking embossed or debossed works of art. Students will be encouraged to express their individual style while following clear, step-by-step techniques to achieve clean, sharp, and professional embossing results. Embossing and debossing on paper are highly visual and elegant techniques that can stand alone or be beautifully combined with calligraphy.
