Into the Dark: Mastering Tonal Values and Creating 3-D Form with Kerri Weller

Color gets all the glory, but value does all the work! This is a pencil/paper workshop with no color work involved. Kerri simplifies fundamental concepts and techniques with drawing exercises that focus on shapes and their design, tonal values, creating 3-dimensionality, lost and found edges and exploring light on form. All are key to the success of an artwork. We’ll finish the day drawing a small composition incorporating lessons learned. With a mastery of values it’s easy to head into the dark, and to gain confidence working in color!

Supplies:

• Drawing Pad, 11 x14 inches / 70, 80 or 90 lb (good quality paper please)
• Graphite pencils, 6B, 4B, 2B, HB, 2H. Good quality brand such as Faber Castell or Derwent Graphic
• Handheld pencil sharpener for sharpening your pencils
• Kneaded eraser
• Hard white eraser, such as Staedtler or Tombow
• Tombow Mono Zero Eraser (Optional but a wonderful addition to your drawing kit)
• Tracing paper pad, 9" x 12” or a few sheets of tracing paper
• Artist chamois or alternatively Kleenex
• 2-4 Blending stumps approximately 1/8 and 1/4 inch in diameter
• Portable battery-operated desktop light such as Ott lites
• Ruler
• Plant materials and a background board will be provided in class.
