Join us for either workshop or TAKE BOTH! This Day for Beginners will be presented on Zoom. If you can’t participate live, still register. Recordings will be available to registered students for over 8 weeks!
Morning – Italian Hand with Lindsey Hook. Italian Hand is often overshadowed by pointed pen scripts like copperplate and Spencerian. It is actually older than both, predating many of our contemporary concepts of Western calligraphy scripts. In this hands-on beginner-friendly workshop, we will be introduced to the basics of using a dip pen and will try our hands at this lovely, delicate script. Through tracing its history to 16th century Italy, students will use the Italian Hand to break down and assess the key elements of any calligraphy script. Registrants will receive a packet with additional resources for continued study.
Afternoon – Copperplate with Laurie Paolinetti. This beginner-friendly lesson will guide students through Copperplate’s basic strokes and lowercase alphabet. Known for its structured letterforms, we will break down its features of graceful slant, thin upstrokes and thick downstrokes, consistency, and elegant & sophisticated appearance. Copperplate was developed in the 18th century, and is often used today for formal invitations, certificates and decorative lettering. Registrants will receive a full exemplar for continued practice.
