This is an introductory class to Spencerian Script — a historical style that was developed in America in the 1840’s by Platt Rogers Spencer. Studying Spencerian helps to improve your overall handwriting. It is an elegant and graceful style can be used for daily correspondence — handwritten letters, stationery designs, wedding invitations and more. This course is tailored for complete beginners or calligraphers of any level who wish to finesse their dip pen calligraphy skills. This introductory class will explore the history of Spencerian Script, the fundamental principles of both minuscule and majuscule alphabets, as well as letter connections.
CLASS SUPPLIES
- Penholder: oblique; nib: stiff nib for beginners (e.g., Nikko G or Zebra Titanium G) or flexible nib for intermediate users (e.g., Leonardt Principal EF or Gillott 303)
- ink: dark for legibility with a fine hairline (e.g., walnut, Higgins Eternal Black, or Fox and Quills)
- paper: semi-transparent blank paper (e.g., Strathmore Layout Bond 16lb or Bienfang Graphics 360 Marker Paper by Speedball)
- paper clips to hold guide sheets
- cleaning supplies including water and paper towels for nib cleaning
- note-taking pens: three multi-color ballpoint gel pens (e.g., Zebra SARASA Clip 0.5 mm in red, blue, and orange)
- mechanical pencil
