Roman Capitals represent the timeless beauty of Latin letterform. Thus, it is no doubt the most important calligraphy style to master in a lifetime. Roman serif capitals are the backbone of Western letterforms, appearing in stone, manuscript, print, and contemporary typography. This workshop focuses on understanding Roman letters as constructed forms, shaped by tool, movement, and proportion using a metal broad-edge nib.
CLASS SUPPLIES
- Broad-edge nib (Speedball C2 or Brause 3mm) or Pilot Parallel 3 or 3.6mm
- straight pen holder with a tapered shape preferred
- some rough or semi-textured paper such as Arches Text Wove, Hahnemühle German Ingres Paper, or WACCA Washington paper (highly recommend Hahnemühle German Ingres Paper)
- your preferred dark ink (gouache is highly recommended)
- plus paper
- ruler
- pencil
- eraser
