During the American Golden Age of Penmanship (1850 - 1925), the Spencerian Standard became the backbone of Business Penmanship and Ornamental Penmanship styles. However, other lesser-known styles emerged from Spencerian as well, including a series of Back Hands. The Abbott Back Hand, in particular, featured thick strokes at the base of letters, rather than on the sides of letters.
In this workshop, we will learn an unusual, yet intriguing and amusing, casual hybrid of the Spencerian Back Hands and the Zanerian Shaded-Base, Eccentric Penmanship.

- Marker layout paper (e.g. Borden & Riley Boris #37 Marker Layout, Canson XL Marker or Pro-Layout, etc.) (P32, P2012)
- Pencil, eraser, and ruler (PL38, E13, S270)
- 2-3 Colored Fineliners for taking notes, if you’re into that sort of thing (M134, M137)
- 2-3 Paper clips
- 2 Inches of low-tack adhesive tape (e.g. washi tape, artist’s tape, etc.) (S1145)
- Small container of clean water (S1695)
- 3-4 Sheets of paper towel
