Have you ever wondered why your attempts at medieval calligraphy lacked that elusive "look" of the ancient originals? Learning and utilizing an authentic medieval hand might just solve your issues.
Join us for 3 lessons of intriguing and enjoyable information as we draw from a lost art form from centuries past.
In this workshop, we will learn to write an authentic medieval hand (gothic textualis). We will examine the details and characteristics that define this ancient text, and will learn how to incorporate them in our own unique pieces of calligraphy. We will delve into some fascinating aspects and history of this significant style. After learning to write the textualis alphabet, we will learn about simple Gothic/Lombardic capitals, and how they are incorporated with the textualis hand. Lastly, we will learn how to write our own little medieval-style "piece", which will incorporate a simple Gothic Versal letter.

Supply List:
-
Pencil and eraser (PL38, PL21, E13)
-
Your choice of a Pilot Parallel pen 1.5mm, or a Lami fountain pen with 1.5mm broad nib... OR any equivalent broad nib pen in 1.5mm size, LOADED WITH BLACK INK. (I will be using a Lami Safari with 1.5 mm pen and a Pilot Parallel 1.5 mm to teach the class) (FP67, FP112, FP97, N04, I123, I04)
-
Some “Ordinary” paper (copy paper or notebook paper, etc.) to take notes, and to write /sketch on while following along in the class. (P25)
-
“Better” paper (good card stock) for finished work, and for serious practice/learning, and for class “projects” Recommend Strathmore Bristol Board 400 series, Fabriano Hot Press paper, or similar. (Cheap paper will “bleed” and ink will “feather”, and results will not be very rewarding). (P110, PS116)
-
Small plastic ruler (12” or so) to draw guidelines for class assignments. Optional: Small plastic T-Square will be quick and easy to draw guidelines on the thicker Bristol board paper, as you can use the edge of the card stock to square your T-square to the page. (S871)
-
A Fine Point Fountain pen loaded with red ink of your choice (I use Diamine Red Dragon). You can use a dip pen with a pointed nib if you prefer, but for learning purposes, a fountain pen will be much more convenient and will be quicker and easier. (FP261, FP222, I183)
-
A second Fine Point Fountain pen, this one loaded with blue ink (I will use Monte Verde Caribbean Blue ink for the class, but you can use whichever blue ink you have on hand.) Again, you can use a dip pen with a pointed nib of your choice (Zebra G, Nikko G, Hunt 101, etc), but for learning/classroom purpose, a fountain pen will be much easier and convenient) (FP261, FP222, I202, N113, N118, N77, H133)
-
Probably a good idea to keep a roll of paper towels, a small bowl of water, or damp rag for unplanned accidents, to wipe ink that inadvertently gets on your fingers, etc.
