Description

Italic calligraphy is one of the most beautiful and versatile styles of calligraphy, but it takes time to master. In this workshop with Cora Pearl, professional calligrapher and college level instructor of Calligraphy and Hand Lettering, we will delve into the nuances of the Italic hand and break down each letter, stroke by stroke using a broad edge nib. In this 6-week workshop (Wednesdays, Jan.14 through Feb.18, 2026 on Zoom, 6:30-9:30pm ET), we will review and analyze the construction of each letter, learning about letter families and qualities common to each letter group. We will end this series of classes with a project to tie together everything we have learned. This workshop is best suited for beginners and intermediate students of calligraphy—it is ideal for calligraphers who have some previous experience with Italic and who want to revisit the basics, break accidental bad habits, and take your Italic calligraphy to the next level of understanding and execution. This workshop is also a helpful refresher for calligraphers who wish to improve their Italic in time to apply for WCG's Zapf Scholarship. Sessions are on Wednesdays, Jan. 14, 21, 28, and Feb. 4, 11 and 18, 2026, 6:30-9:30pm ET. Participants can view recordings of each session for 60 days. Between each class session, Cora will review student work posted on a Padlet page created for this workshop. Important: Students are asked to 1) complete a questionnaire about your calligraphy experience prior to the beginning of the series and 2) have your camera on during each workshop session. Since this is an online class in real time on Zoom, seeing student faces makes a huge difference in pacing the class, seeing student understanding and energy, creating a safe and nurturing learning environment, and an overall more enjoyable experience for everyone.
