Johannes Parisurteil - Blackletter: From Strokes to Words - Feb 13, 27; Mar 6, 2026

In this workshop, you’ll dive into the bold, structured, yet elegant and powerful world of blackletter calligraphy. We’ll start with the basic strokes, move on to letters, and finally build up to words and phrases in blackletter styles. You’ll learn how to draw and space your strokes so they develop into elegant, dynamic letters full of character – and how to arrange and compose them to create a piece of blackletter art. We’ll cover the entire alphabet, minuscules and majuscules, as well as pen-manipulated ornaments and how they function within words.

 The workshop is divided into three sessions.

• In the first session, we’ll focus on the fundamentals: how to draw strokes that are both bold and graceful, and how to combine them into letters.
• In the second session, we’ll take the next step, moving from letters to words and sentences. Spacing, composition, and the interplay of upper- and lowercase letters will be key topics.
• The third and final session will concentrate on the finishing touches – often the most challenging part. We’ll explore pen manipulation, ornamentation, and layout, so your calligraphy can become a true work of art!
