An Italic Journey: Classic to Modern by Viktor Kams – Level: (I) Intermediate

Note: This class offering is ONLINE. Online participants will choose a total of 30 hours of online instruction (two 15-hour classes or one 30-hour class) via live and/or recorded participation. Schedule will be posted prior to class selection.

This workshop intends to provide valuable information about the evolution of the “Italic hand” from a formal classic approach looking at manuscripts and work samples of various scribes from different periods in history to contemporary modern versions of this versatile hand.

An in depth look at structure, shape and rhythm will help attendants to learn to observe, recognize and appreciate the little details that make italics a more complex and refined script beyond
the basics. Students will explore different tools and techniques to understand the possibilities that the Italics offer us. From formal broad edge pen writing to dynamic and gestural proposals with other tools such as flat and pointed brushes or ruling pens.

The objective of the class is to expand our perception as calligraphers of the wide spectrum of variations that we can create within the Italic letter. Students are expected to learn at their pace but to be active and participating in dynamic of the class as well as sharing their progress, questions, doubts and achievements with the rest of the group. We all can learn from the struggles and experiences of other classmates.
