Description

Come learn how to make letterforms that will almost dance off the page. In this workshop you will be shown you the 'ins' and 'outs' of pressurized letterforms. Not only will you discover how to create elegance in your letters but also how to make them more playful and energetic!

Our main focus will be on Roman Capitals. We will begin by looking at their formal proportions. Moving forward we will work using pressure & release in order to be successful in developing subtlety in our letterforms. Then we begin to play….with different exercises we will focus on creating exciting/dynamic and fun shapes that fit with our text.

We will primarily be working with pencil. As we move along Suzie will demonstrate and explain why using different products/tools and papers as well as techniques can make an impact on our designs. There will also be focus on using a pointed pen.

  •   Basic calligraphy tool box

  •   Layout paper (I will be using Borden & Riley #37 Boris Marker Layout) (P09)

  •   Arches MBM or Arches Text Wove (1/2 sheet) (PA104, PS104, PS01)

  •   Tracing paper (P112)

  •   Small piece of black paper (Arches Cover / Canson MeTintes / Fabriano Black Black ...... what do you already have?) (PS90, PS61, P2013)

  •   Wood cased pencils: HB, 4B & 4H (bring what you have) appropriate sharpeners (I will be using a clutch holder w / 2mm leads) (PL38, PL70)

  •   2 or 3 Prismacolor pencils (light & bright colors) (PL05)

  •   Mechanical pencil 0.3mm & 0.9mm (if you have them) (PL21)

  •   Xacto knife + metal ruler + cutting mat (S417, S270, S504)

  •   C-thru ruler (12” is great) (S798)

  •   White vinyl eraser & kneaded eraser (E13, E09)

  •   One tube of watercolor / gouache (your color preference) or walnut ink (WNG1, WNWC1, I145)

  •   Mixing palette (S2005, S2006)

  •   Gum Arabic (I84)

  •   Mixing / loading brush (I prefer natural bristle loading brushes, $1 each #4 flat) (BR02)

  •   Water container, wipe cloth (S1695)

  •   Straight pen holder (H113, H111)

  •   Pointed nibs (suggestion: Hunt 56 or Nikko G) bring what your comfortable with ...... (be sure it fits into your STRAIGHT pen holder) (N86, N113, N77, N69)

  •   Cushioning (padding) under your paper ...... I will be using blotter paper approx.: 9 x 12” (S269)


    Optional:

  •   Small pieces of other print making papers (to experiment with, what’s in your flat file?)

  •   Gold Pearl Ex powder or Finetec gold (I139, S1000)

  •   320 wet / dry sandpaper or polishing paper (S107)

  •   Pilot Color Eno 0.7 (color mechanical pencils – I will be demonstrating them) if you look online for them you will also see other brands available – I have found the Pilot 0.7 brand to be the best for what we are doing) (PL25)

  •   Piece of clear thin rigid plastic something similar to clear transparencies 

  •   Sharpie fine black waterproof maker (M183)

  •  2mm lead holder (also referred to as a clutch pencil) HB lead is great (S650)
