Pat Blair - Design Studio | Twenty Layouts - Sept 18, 25; Oct 2, 9

This workshop will cover the fundamentals of design to create a successful layout that combines lettering and watercolor florals, pen illustration, or your favorite decorative technique.

Student will learn:

1. 20 layout ideas (at least!) to use with small compositions
2. Successful placement of elements combining one word or small text blocks with a floral or illustrative element.
3. How to create thumbnail sketches to help explore ideas
4. How to transfer your initial idea to good paper and set up a pencil guide
5. How to use color to reinforce a mood or feeling

Student will be working on multiple studio projects, from concept to finished piece, as time allows. Each student can choose the lettering style and illustrative element they would like to work with. Pat will be demonstrating with floral watercolors, but any style will do. 

Pat will also demonstrate and teaching a simple floral design using a wedge (triangle) brush, that can be used for projects, but the class will not be covering instruction in lettering. Come prepared with your favorite lettering style and an illustration style if you have one, and student will explore many ways to combine the 2 to create successful compositions.

• A sheet of hot press Arches Watercolor Paper, 90 lb, or a pad such as Canson MixMedia, to accommodate your artwork or illustration

• Pointed Pen or Broad Pen for lettering (N02, N09, N113, N69) (H133, H134, H129)

• Ink or Gouache for lettering (HG749, WNG1, WNG2, I28, I07)

• Triangle (Wedge) brush, if you would like to follow along with the demonstration. (Royal langnickel royal golden triangular size 8, or Silver Silk medium size) (BR70, BR59)

• Several tube watercolors for the floral painting (WNWC1, WNWC2, WNWC3, HW100)

• Small plastic or ceramic palette (S747, S1094, S2005, S2006)
